Starting off another week with some new awesome drawing tutorials. This one is the long awaited Lucy Heartfilia from Fairy Tail requested by users Dekko and jamila panergo. Lucy is the female counterpart to Natsu in the Fairy Tail Guild and you can check out his tutorial here. A sexy and curvacious blond who has no problem using her good looks to get ahead, she's also a powerful celestial spirit mage in her own right. Today's tutorial is recommended for all levels as it's pretty straightforward. Feel free to post your requests by clicking on the request tutorial button at the top of the page. Also, you can find all of our Fairy Tail drawing tutorials by clicking on the Fairy Tail tag in the tag cloud at the right of the page or use our search function at the top right to see if we have your favorite character. Let's get our materials ready and learn how to draw Lucy.

Step 1

Step 01: Just a reminder to all of our mangakas that all of the blue lines you see in this tutorial are only construction lines and will be erased later on, so don't press too hard on your pencil when drawing these lines. Our final lines you'll see in black at the end of the tutorial.

We'll start with our head circle, center and eye lines. The center line is titled at an angle and is on the right half of the head circle. The eye line is also titled down to the right and starts about a third of the way up the head circle on the left.

Pro tip 1: Start with a large circle for the head in the upper center of your paper. Go around a few times to get a nice outline of a circle, as it can be quite hard to draw a circle free hand. Then trace your head circle over the outline you have made.

Pro tip 2: The center line should extend below and above the head circle. Add a vertical dash on the center line to mark where the chin will be, this'll help in the next step. The distance between the chin dash and the bottom of the head circle is about 1/4 of a head circle.

Step 2

Step 02: Let's begin here by drawing the jaw line and then we'll add the facial features. Starting on the head circle about halfway between the center and eye line in the lower left quadrant of the circle we'll draw the jaw line on the left as a fairly flat diagonal to the chin dash. From there, we'll draw a nice curving line back up to touch the head circle where it meets the eye line. (Note: her jaw line on the right is more visible and therefore more curved than the jaw line on the left.) Next, let's draw the "c" shape for the ear on the left inside the head circle starting on the eye line and finishing on the head circle just above the jaw line. Continuing, we'll draw the horizontal ")" marks for the top of the eyes just on the eye line (the inner corners of the eyes will be just below the eye line). Lastly, just add the curved dash mark for the nose just above the head circle to the right of the center line.

Step 3

Step 03: We're doing pretty good so far. Let's do some more facial features, some hair outlines and the neck. We'll begin by drawing the upside down "V" shape for the bangs across the forehead area.

Pro tip: You can pick a point in the top right of the forehead for the apex of the "v" shape. Then just draw the curving line down to the right to where the eye line and head circles meet. We'll do the same from the top point down to the left. But here we'll go all the way down to the jaw line just touching the left tip of the eye on the left. Then to the left of the "v" shape and using the ear as a guide we'll draw another hair line from the head circle on the left up to the forehead.

Pro tip 2: This line should 'close' the ear up so you should use the ear as your guide. Next, add the small "c" shape to the inner ear. Moving down, we'll draw the curving line for the mouth and below that a small crescent shape. Lastly, in this step, we need to draw the neck lines. They start on the jaw line. The neck line on the right is shorter and curves more than the neck line on the left.

Step 4

Step 04: Time to draw Lucy's huge eyes! Start with the line for the lower part of the eye. When you've got that you can add the "(" ")" lines inside the eye to form the pupils. Add a short line just above the eyes and eye line for the upper lids. Finally, draw the longer lines over the eyes for the eyebrows. Note: the eyebrow on the right curves down to touch the eye line in the inner corner.

Step 5

Step 05: We'll zoom in on the eye area so you can see the details we should draw. To begin, we can draw the curve line and the three straight diagonal lines inside the inner ear. Then, moving to the eyes, we'll start by drawing the reflection spots in the pupils. In the eye on the left, it's a "c" shape in the upper right corner of the pupil. In the eye on the right, it's more of a "u" shape in the upper right of the eye. Then, above the eye on the left we'll draw a line and add the three "^" shapes for her eye lashes. For the eye on the right, add 4 "^" marks for the eye lashes. To wrap up this step, just draw the three dashes beneath each eye.

Step 6

Step 06: For the next few steps we're going to be working on Lucy's hair. In the image above, you'll see I've done something a little new. I've decided to add numbers to show you the major hair segments and the order to draw them in. So, we want to start by drawing the three spikes on the top left of the head. Then, we'll draw #2 from those spikes around the head to form a new hair spike on the right. #3 is the long hair spike on the right that overlaps the neck. #4 is on the forehead, the point of the hair spike just touching the eye on the right. #5 is the large hair spike on the left that overlaps the neck. Note how it is actually a continuation of the upside down "v" we drew in a previous step. Lastly, #6 are the two lines from the head circle to the neck line below the ear an the one line above the ear. When you've got all that we'll move on to add some more hair detailing.

Step 7

Step 07: We have four more hair spikes and a line to add to Lucy's hair bunch on the top left. Then we'll draw the four lines from the hair bunch to the hair segment near the ear. Moving down, add the spikes and lines to the hair segment below the ear. And then, move to the right where we'll draw another hair spike. and just beneath the jaw and to the right of the neck there's a line to add and that does it for this step.

Step 8

Step 08: We're just going to add lines to the hair to suggest some layers. Do your best to imitate the image above as I can't really describe all of the lines ^_-. But make sure to extend the neck lines to form shoulders. We'll see the full shoulder on the right. Then, add two lines for the collar bones.

Step 9

Step 09: That's it for our construction lines, mangakas! Take out your black pens and trace out your final lines making sure not to trace the lines under the hair segments as these should be hidden (i.e. left side of the face, parts of the neck and shoulders).

Pro tip: Just get a first nice outline in black. Then after you've got that we'll go back and work on line quality and filling/shading.

Line quality: we'll want a few lines more bold than others, so we should thicken them slightly. I've thickened the jaw line, and the lines for the eyes, the eyebrows and a few of the hair spikes on the top left.

Filling: I've filled in the pupils leaving just the reflection spots empty. Also, make sure the eye lashes are filled in. I've also filled in the nose, mouth and lower dimple in black. And there are three places in the hair that I've filled, one in the bunch of spikes on the top left, one on the right, and in the area between the face and neck.

Shading: Using my pen, I've shaded in two spots: inside the inner ear, and using straight diagonal lines the area just beneath the chin on the neck.

Step 10

Step 10: That's all she wrote! Just wait for your ink to completely dry and then completely erase any remaining construction lines that you can see. Take a look, you've just drawn the seductively simple Lucy Heartfilia from Fairy Tail! If your goal is to become a great mangaka make sure to draw Lucy again from memory. Then compare the final drawing with the original and correct any mistakes you might have made. Try once again from memory. This is the best way to build a huge library of shapes that you can use in the future for your own manga characters.

Draw with passion! -_^
